The Verse of Light

Quran 24:35 unfolded through the sequence of vessels it names: niche, lamp, glass, star, tree, oil, and light upon light.

What is here

The full verse and a guided descent through its named images, one layer at a time and in textual order.

02 · begins

How to enter

Start outside the niche. Move inward slowly; at every layer, return to the exact phrase that introduced it.

03 · promises

The boundary

The sequence follows the verse. The visual nesting and short glosses are editorial; the history of interpretation is much larger.

04 · The reading instrument

Enter the image in the order it is given.

The verse does not present one static picture. It keeps placing one bright vessel inside another, then carries the similitude beyond the objects that formed it.
  1. 01Start with the frame

The likeness is introduced before the niche appears. The image belongs inside a statement about divine light.

  2. 02Move inward

Niche, lamp, glass, star, tree, and oil arrive in sequence. Each new layer changes how the previous one is seen.

  3. 03Continue past the glow

‘Light upon light’ closes the nested image, but not the verse; guidance, likenesses, and knowledge still follow.

God is named the Light of the heavens and the earth; then a likeness is offered for His light. Everything that follows is that likeness, vessel within vessel.

The verse continues

The similitude closes at light upon light, but the verse does not: it goes on to guidance, to the giving of likenesses, and to knowledge. It is one verse, whole:

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things.
