Do they not see the birds above them with wings outspread and [sometimes] folded in? None holds them [aloft] except the Most Merciful. Indeed He is, of all things, Seeing.

Do they not see the birds controlled in the atmosphere of the sky? None holds them up except Allah. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.

What classical readers understood
The suspended bird was offered as an everyday wonder passed by unnoticed.
What science sees
Lift, pressure differentials, thermals and vortex control hold the bird: invisible structures in the air, mastered by anatomy refined to the feather: the mechanism deepens rather than dissolves the wonder.
