Cara masuk
Mulailah di luar relung. Bergeraklah ke dalam perlahan; pada setiap lapis, kembalilah ke frasa persis yang memperkenalkannya.
Batasnya
Urutannya mengikuti ayatnya. Susunan bersarang secara visual dan penjelasan singkatnya adalah pilihan redaksional; sejarah penafsirannya jauh lebih luas.

Masuki citra itu menurut urutan yang diberikan.
Ayat ini tidak menyajikan satu gambar yang diam. Ia terus menempatkan satu wadah bercahaya di dalam wadah lain, lalu membawa perumpamaannya melampaui benda-benda yang membentuknya.- 01Mulai dari bingkainya
Perumpamaan diperkenalkan sebelum relungnya muncul. Citra itu berada di dalam sebuah pernyataan tentang cahaya ilahi.
- 02Bergerak ke dalam
Relung, pelita, kaca, bintang, pohon, dan minyak datang berurutan. Setiap lapis baru mengubah cara lapis sebelumnya dilihat.
- 03Lanjut melewati cahayanya
‘Cahaya di atas cahaya’ menutup citra bersarang itu, tetapi bukan ayatnya; petunjuk, perumpamaan, dan pengetahuan masih menyusul.

ٱللَّهُ نُورُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ مَثَلُ نُورِهِۦ
God is named the Light of the heavens and the earth; then a likeness is offered for His light. Everything that follows is that likeness, vessel within vessel.
The verse continues
The similitude closes at light upon light, but the verse does not: it goes on to guidance, to the giving of likenesses, and to knowledge. It is one verse, whole:
يَهْدِى ٱللَّهُ لِنُورِهِۦ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَضْرِبُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْأَمْثَٰلَ لِلنَّاسِ وَٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌ
ٱللَّهُ نُورُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ مَثَلُ نُورِهِۦ كَمِشْكَوٰةٍ فِيهَا مِصْبَاحٌ ٱلْمِصْبَاحُ فِى زُجَاجَةٍ ٱلزُّجَاجَةُ كَأَنَّهَا كَوْكَبٌ دُرِّىٌّ يُوقَدُ مِن شَجَرَةٍ مُّبَٰرَكَةٍ زَيْتُونَةٍ لَّا شَرْقِيَّةٍ وَلَا غَرْبِيَّةٍ يَكَادُ زَيْتُهَا يُضِىٓءُ وَلَوْ لَمْ تَمْسَسْهُ نَارٌ نُّورٌ عَلَىٰ نُورٍ يَهْدِى ٱللَّهُ لِنُورِهِۦ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَضْرِبُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْأَمْثَٰلَ لِلنَّاسِ وَٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌ
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things.
