What does the Quran say about grief?

The Quran does not tell the grieving to stop grieving. It records a prophet who wept until he lost his sight, and it answers sorrow with company rather than correction.

Grief is allowed

Yaqub's grief is described without rebuke, and his refusal to despair is stated in the same breath as his sorrow.

  • Yusuf 12:84✦ skyread

And he turned away from them and said, "Oh, my sorrow over Joseph," and his eyes became white from grief, for he was [of that] a suppressor.

  • Yusuf 12:86✦ skyread

He said, "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah, and I know from Allah that which you do not know.

Do not grieve

The phrase recurs as reassurance rather than instruction, most famously said inside the cave.

  • At-Tawba 9:40✦ skyread

If you do not aid the Prophet - Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, "Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us." And Allah sent down his tranquillity upon him and supported him with angels you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allah - that is the highest. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.

  • Aal-i-Imraan 3:139✦ skyread

So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers.

Where hearts find rest

The answer offered is not distraction but remembrance.

  • Ar-Ra'd 13:28✦ skyread

Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured."

And when they have fulfilled their term, then there is no blame upon you for what they do with themselves in an acceptable manner. And Allah is [fully] Acquainted with what you do.

How the measured parts were made. Every verse was scored against several questions about this subject using the same embeddings that power Ask. A verse joins the subject when it scores within 0.03 of the best match for one of those questions (here, 0.8718 and above). That is a similarity ranking, not a judgement that a verse is “about” the topic, and it will include some verses a reader would not have chosen and miss some they would.

The channel scores are judgements made by a language model reading each verse, not measurements of the Arabic. They describe how strongly a quality sounds in a verse, which is a useful rough shape and not a fact about meaning.

The sections above are curated by hand and are a draft pending scholarly review. This page shows where the Quran speaks on a subject; it does not issue rulings.
