مَرَجَ ٱلْبَحْرَيْنِ يَلْتَقِيَانِ
He released the two seas, meeting [side by side];
بَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخٌ لَّا يَبْغِيَانِ
Between them is a barrier [so] neither of them transgresses.
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى مَرَجَ ٱلْبَحْرَيْنِ هَٰذَا عَذْبٌ فُرَاتٌ وَهَٰذَا مِلْحٌ أُجَاجٌ وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخًا وَحِجْرًا مَّحْجُورًا
And it is He who has released [simultaneously] the two seas, one fresh and sweet and one salty and bitter, and He placed between them a barrier and prohibiting partition.
The text describes two seas that meet while a barrier (barzakh) stands between them which they do not transgress: one sweet and palatable, one salty and bitter.
Classical commentators read the two seas variously: fresh rivers meeting the ocean, or the great seas of the known world, with the barrier as God's decree holding each in its nature.
Where waters of different salinity and density meet, they stratify instead of instantly mixing: a halocline forms, a real and measurable boundary layer. Fresh Amazon water tracks into the Atlantic for many kilometers; in the Strait of Gibraltar, Atlantic and Mediterranean waters slide past each other in layered currents. Mixing does happen, but slowly, across a persistent boundary.
