An-Nisaa 4:56✦ exploreread إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا سَوْفَ نُصْلِيهِمْ نَارًا كُلَّمَا نَضِجَتْ جُلُودُهُم بَدَّلْنَٰهُمْ جُلُودًا غَيْرَهَا لِيَذُوقُوا۟ ٱلْعَذَابَ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَزِيزًا حَكِيمًا
Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses - We will drive them into a Fire. Every time their skins are roasted through We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted in Might and Wise.
What the text says
The text, in a verse of warning: whenever their skins are consumed, We replace them with other skins, so that they may taste the punishment.
What classical readers understood
Commentators saw in the renewal of skins the renewal of sensation, skin as the seat of tasting pain.
What science sees
Nociceptors, the pain receptors, are densest in the skin; a full-thickness burn that destroys the skin's nerve endings becomes painless. Sensation lives where the verse locates it. Presented as the text presents it: a warning, not a curiosity.
