Al-Anbiyaa 21:33✦ exploreread وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلَّيْلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ وَٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ كُلٌّ فِى فَلَكٍ يَسْبَحُونَ
And it is He who created the night and the day and the sun and the moon; all [heavenly bodies] in an orbit are swimming.
Yaseen 36:38✦ exploreread وَٱلشَّمْسُ تَجْرِى لِمُسْتَقَرٍّ لَّهَا ذَٰلِكَ تَقْدِيرُ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْعَلِيمِ
And the sun runs [on course] toward its stopping point. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.
Yaseen 36:40✦ exploreread لَا ٱلشَّمْسُ يَنۢبَغِى لَهَآ أَن تُدْرِكَ ٱلْقَمَرَ وَلَا ٱلَّيْلُ سَابِقُ ٱلنَّهَارِ وَكُلٌّ فِى فَلَكٍ يَسْبَحُونَ
It is not allowable for the sun to reach the moon, nor does the night overtake the day, but each, in an orbit, is swimming.
What the text says
The text: He created night and day, sun and moon, each swimming (yasbahun) in an orbit (falak); the sun runs to a resting place appointed; neither overtakes the other.
What classical readers understood
Falak was pictured classically as the celestial sphere's course; the swimming verb struck commentators as motion through a medium.
What science sees
The moon orbits Earth, Earth orbits the sun, and the sun itself swims: it orbits the galactic center at about 230 km/s, carrying the whole system toward the solar apex.
