Al-Hadid 57:25✦ exploreread لَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا رُسُلَنَا بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ وَأَنزَلْنَا مَعَهُمُ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَٱلْمِيزَانَ لِيَقُومَ ٱلنَّاسُ بِٱلْقِسْطِ وَأَنزَلْنَا ٱلْحَدِيدَ فِيهِ بَأْسٌ شَدِيدٌ وَمَنَٰفِعُ لِلنَّاسِ وَلِيَعْلَمَ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَنصُرُهُۥ وَرُسُلَهُۥ بِٱلْغَيْبِ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ قَوِىٌّ عَزِيزٌ
We have already sent Our messengers with clear evidences and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice. And We sent down iron, wherein is great military might and benefits for the people, and so that Allah may make evident those who support Him and His messengers unseen. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.
What the text says
The sura named The Iron says: We sent down iron, in which is great might and benefits for people. The verb is anzalna: sent down.
What classical readers understood
Commentators read anzalna both as bestowed (as in cattle 'sent down' in 39:6, meaning granted) and, in some reports, as literal descent. The verse's emphasis is iron's might and usefulness as a divine grant.
What science sees
No ordinary star can forge elements past iron by fusion, and iron itself ends a star's life: fusion at the iron core absorbs energy, collapsing the star into a supernova. Every atom of iron on Earth was made inside stars and scattered by their deaths before the Earth formed; meteoric iron literally fell from the sky and was humanity's first worked iron.
