He created the heavens and earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. Unquestionably, He is the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver.
What the text says
The text: He winds (yukawwir) the night over the day and winds the day over the night. Takwir is the verb of wrapping a turban around a head.
What classical readers understood
Classically read as the perpetual overtaking of one by the other; the winding verb was noted as an image of covering around something.
What science sees
On the rotating globe, day and night are exactly two wrapped shells chasing each other around a sphere: the terminator line coils the planet endlessly.
