Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing? Then will they not believe?

What classical readers understood
Classical readings differed: some took the joining as the sky withholding rain and the earth withholding growth until both were opened; others as a primordial unity later separated.

Modern cosmology begins with all matter, energy, space and time in a single unimaginably dense state that expanded: everything that became galaxies, suns and earths was once one. The resemblance is striking; the verse remains a verse, not an equation.
